Subject to competing theoretical explanations and polarised perspectives on its social and economic impacts, the phenomenon of gentrification continues to be a deeply controversial topic and, at a time when there are continued calls for more research and activism that engages with the experiences of the working-class individuals, households and communities who are threatened with or actually displaced by gentrification, Gentrifier’s focus on the personal experiences of its authors—three gentrification researchers who ‘admit’ to being reluctant gentrifiers of urban neighbourhoods in the United States—is likely to provoke strong critical reaction. Exploring their housing biographies and lifestyles through a combination of academic analysis and a series of richly-described personal narratives and reflections, some commentators will see it as rather self-indulgent and/or apologist: certainly, the book provides conflicted gentrifiers with some post hoc rationalisations and justifications...
