摘要
In the last century, many Persian gardens in Iran have been destroyed and many are dilapidated or under threat from urban expansion. Kerman, a city in south-eastern Iran known for centuries for its many gardens, has experienced enormous population growth since the 1950s and a major loss of Persian gardens; only a handful survive. To determine the extent of loss, Persian gardens in Kerman were categorised as (i) renovated and green, (ii) abandoned garden but largely or partly intact site, (iii) those with only a pavilion remaining, and (iv) erased gardens. In addition, aerial images of Kerman taken in 1956 were used to determine the number of gardens lost in the last few decades; this is the first survey of this kind in Iran. Forty gardens have been erased, representing 75 % of gardens that existed in 1956, and several more are in danger of being lost, with neglected grounds. Since Kerman is typical of Iranian cities, the large number erased suggests a major loss of Persian gardens across Iran. Currently, Persian gardens are judged on individual merits. We propose that each garden is seen as part of a population, and that the remaining population of gardens is preserved, whatever their current condition, for long-term future decisions about these sites as part of the greening of Iranian cities. Without such an approach, Persian gardens will likely become rare and their unique and ubiquitous cultural importance in Iran left as mere memory or as a few museums.
